All Chevrolets are negative ground. What year you working on?

May be too late now, but did you polarize your generator/regulator? Wouldn't hurt to still do it.

If, when you say you 'turned it' you mean you reversed the polarity to negative ground, that is the correct hookup. With positive ground, your ammeter will read backward because current is flowing in the opposite direction. Maybe no harm done. As Herb said, you will need to polarize your generator to reverse the poles on the generator magnets. Also check out the cut-out relay.
