Hi..all.. I need help: If transmission is shifted
sloppy it will hang in second and jam what ever other gear is selected causing transmission to
lock.. You would think wear but it is not .
The slides in the top holding shifter are snug and
I suspect it is staying in second position when shifter if brought to low jamming two gears..
Would appreciated anythoughts. To Chip.. its the
same durn thing you helped on when I was stuck..

Geeze Roy your giving the "Maytag Guy" a bad name. I put a 40 Ford (OOPS!) column shift box on the back of my 235, in the 37 Coupe, years ago and it wouldn't even do that. I went out behind the shop this morning ( 33 degrees ) and checked 4 shift covers. Three say this is impossible, one says maybe. To say it jams would seem an understatement, does it feel more like its clamped in a vise ? If you could remove the shift lever using the tool shown in the Repair Manual you could inspect it or try another one. That worked when they were new but I think they're permanently set after 75 years. I would try another cover and see if that fixes it. Better yet just don't speed shift when you race those little old ladies!!

I put my cover wrong way after inspetion my gear boks, and have the gearshift handle of. My be you have done the same manner ?
The gearboks hang ,jam and locks as you
describe.

Hey, thanks for the comments.. I have locked that sucker up several times and removed replaced cover, and a few other VCCA guys helped or installed it so pretty sure its on straight.. Trying another cover and shifter might be it..
anyone got a extra cover and shifter laying around? thanks guys.. roy

I feel your pain. This happened to me on tour. I shifted from second to first and locked it up while moving about 2 MPH. In my case it managed to bust a tooth from the low/reverse sliding gear. Upon further inspection, the trans. top was fine, the gear shift lever tip however was badly worn. I welded it up on either side and ground to fit. Here is a picture of the difference between a good shifter and a worn one.

Tks for the picture RustyFender.. It verifys what
a friend of mine helped me do to the shifter last summer.. However It appears I did not go far enough with the welding and too far with the grinding.. That will be my next step.. build
the shifter up more.. thanks for your input and especially the pics.. roy

Roy, I thought you got that thang fixed. Must be all that speed shifting you do. I have a couple of old trannies in storage. I'll take a look to see if they're any good.

Hi Bill, i thought it was fixed until I locked it up twice on that last Ok tour.. I will give the shifter a better build up and grinder shaping and see what happens.. After that if I still lock it up will come to you... tks roy

Rusty Fender - I just got done replacing my low gear since I busted a tooth in it.

I do not know how I busted a single tooth but it happen.

I was lucky that over the years I collected a couple of transmission so I was able to find a decent gear to use.

I found that when I was replacing the tranny cover, if I was not all the into neutral that the trasnmission cover would go on but it would bind or jam when I tried to shift gears.

Hi Qman,
Check to see if you have the transmission top installed correctly. If you install it backward, it will cause the gears to bind up. Make sure the shift forks are aligned with the channels in the sliding gears. You should be able to raise one side of the tranny top and peek inside with a flashlight to see. Also check your repair manual and/or Herb\'s Cutaway Picture to see that all the gears are installed correctly. If the low/reverse sliding gear is on backward, that will certainly cause it to bind up.
