When I bought this car, the guy told me it had never been driven in the rain. Well, I know why!! The control handle for the wiper won't budge! So here's my question:

After I remove the plate around the knob and remove the 4 screws that hold the fabric strip the plate rests on, what am I going to find behind the fabric?
Is the wiper control knob attached to the motor and does it come out when you remove the motor? I can't figure out why its frozen stiff and so I'm wondering what "little Jack Horner is going to find when he sticks in his thumb!!" Is he going to pull out a nightmare??

The 1931 wiper knob connects to a long goofy looking rod, which in turn connects to the wiper motor. laugh laugh laugh

GOTTA31, "ta" stands for technical advisor. For
1931 I think it is Bill Barker.

GOTTA31: You are a member of the VCCA and you don't know what a "TA" is? Holy Cow! bigl bigl bigl bigl

Captain Harley: Bill Barker is not the 1931 "TA". Billy Barker is the Administrator of Chevy Chatter. The "TA" for 1931 is an old dude in Texas known as Chippy Dippy.

If the knob and rod is stuck, I would first suggest removing the wiper motor by removing the vacuum tube and two screws holding it to the bracket on the outside upper windshield panel. That way you can find out if the valve on the wiper or the rod pivot or both are stuck.

Its great to have all you genie's to help us "newbies"!
I'm going to remove the motor from the outside first and take a look. If I see a bomb about to explode, I'll put everything back and talk to the "TA". Chipper, thanks for the advice.

Chipper:

I removed the ww motor. I now understand what was being said about that control rod! Anyway, the motor seems to be in working order when operated by hand. The gears moved freely. The part of the wiper the control rod hooks on to moves probably a 1/32" or 1/16" at the most. I don't know if thats all thats required to actuate the wiper or not.
The vacuum line to the motor was not connected but was resting behind the motor so I couldn't see it until I got a light in there to look. It had a screw in it to keep it plugged up. I tested the line with the motor running and there is vacuum at the hose end. However, when connected to the wiper, a hissing sound can be heard. I looked at the hose end and its not split. I can't tell where the leak is but its got to be coming out of the ww motor someplace.

Any thoughts?

Tsk, tsk....wrong again! I'm a dog remember? You know....a mangy old mutt! bigl bigl bigl

Your wiper motor is probably leaking around the shaft. Sounds like it might be time for a complete rebuild.

I notice the Filling Station does not sell repair kits for ww wiper motors, but they do offer a rebuilding service for $95. Does anyone know someone who sells gaskets and rebuilding kits for these? If not, I guess 95 bucks is the best I can do.

You can buy a kit from several Model A part suppliers. I use Snyder's Antique Auto Parts in Ohio or Mac's in New York. They can be googled.
