I took the oil distributor off of a spare engine to see how it works and I have a question. In the parts book it shows a gasket between the valve and the body. When I took the one I have apart it did not have a gasket there. Should there be one and what is it made of?
I used rubberized gasket material you can buy at any auto parts store. Put a very light layer of grease or oil on the machined surface and place it on the gasket sheet. That will leave an mark you then cut around.

You need that gasket to serve as a buffer between the eat machined in the cast iron housing and the steel end of the valve. It minimizes the wear between those surfaces. That valve does close when the engine is not running.
