The unfortunate reality is that I have had to adopt the mindset that there is no such thing as privacy or data security these days. All I can do is be ready to deal with the consequences.
With respect to our vehicles “tattling” on us, these recent articles do not reveal the full extent of data that is available. Even before many people were using active communication links to their vehicles, there were and are still data recorders on our vehicles. They capture data about things such as speed, seat belt usage, number of occupants, and throttle and brake position. The data is recorded on a continuous loop for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. If there is a catastrophic event such as an accident, the recording stops. Investigators can then retrieve the data to help reconstruct the incident. Insurance companies use this to determine who was at fault.
Yes, we are living in 1984!
