Based on what I have seen on vehicles and read in the shop manuals and Master Parts List 1940 was the first year that the front brake adjustment was through the backing plate.

I can only assume that the adjustment hole in the front drum was used when Chevy introduced hydraulic brakes.

What can be confusing is that the front brake drums offered for service in 1940 and later had the access hole so they could retrofit to the pre-1940 vehicles.

My '36 Master has 2 holes with snap in covers per backing plate. One hole per brake shoe.

My 38 has no holes in the backing plate and a single hole in the drum but it is an Aus built truck.
