Can you tell me what these fossilized thingies are on the emergency brake cables for my 1940 Chev passenger car?

Thanks!

Link worked fine for me. Just guessing but they look like an aftermarket devise to take slack out of the cables.

It looks like an after market device to clamp on a brake cable to make it shorter.

I agree with a cable shortener.

Cable clamps to compensate for stretched cables. Cheaper and easier than replacing the entire cable, or reswedgeing the ends.

I agree they are a type of clamp to shorten the cable. My 41 has had turnbuckles installed to shorten the cables. Cables will naturally stretch and need t over adjusted over time.

I have found that having an old car is a constant project that is never done. I think that is a good thing. Keeps me learning new things. Having two from different eras is just a form of higher education.
