For the 1929 1-1/2 ton truck International Series, I need a source for the 2 Rear Service Brake Pull Back springs. I cannot find them in the Filling Station online catalog.
I have attached a picture taken by my good friend Art S. of the same truck model that is located as a static display in the Tempe, AZ museum.
Hello NormanCushing, I typed in '1929 chevy 1-1/2 ton truck brake system parts breakdown'. One of the responses was: EarlyChevroletParts (Gary Wallace) Catalog pdf. Scrolling to UC (Under Carriage) I saw - 1928-29 Brake Rod Return Spring (2-req) Rear Service Pull Back UC 48.00 PR. There are no pictures or drawings. Suggest calling and referencing your museum photo, EarlyChevroletParts may be able to help you.
Maybe a Model A Ford Throwout bearing collar spring would be a close replacement. I usually start at the local hardware store for springs and sundry hardware. They carry a lot that is usable stuff that can be made to work on our autos.
I took your advice and reached out to EarlyChevroletParts and discussed my needs with proprietor Gary W. They have the springs. There was some discussion about those being the correct springs or a possible other set of springs. They carry both sets. I will do a bit more research to narrow down exactly which set of springs is required and then make a purchase.
I did not know of EarlyChevroletParts until learning about your suggestion. Thank you for doing the web search and finding the springs. Once again you came to my aid. You are kind and helpful. Thank you!
A 29 on static display in the Tempe, AZ museum has springs around 2" long and the coils are probably 1-1/8" to 1-1/4", and Wire diameter is 1/16" to 3/32".
Looking at my truck and moving the brake linkage the minimum length is about 2.25 inches and the maximum movement is another 1.5 inches to provide an extended length of about 4 inches. There is a bit of guess work here due to only observing the museum truck and measuring linkage movement on my truck that is missing both springs.
McMaster-Carr has a part with length of 2.5 inch including hooks, od of 0.875, wd of 0.075, and extends approximately 4 inches requiring approximately 14 lbs of force. Possibly this product would make a good alternative if the extension length and force is appropriate.
Fortunately, the EarlyChevroletParts vendor has the springs so I will pick up that set.
