I hear and feel a clicking or popping noise coming from the direction of the steering shaft. I can feel it in the steering wheel. This is an occasional problem. I think I have narrowed it down to the steering shaft between the fire wall and the steering gear. If I grab it and shake the shaft there is movement from the end closest to the firewall. Is this a common problem? I hate to buy an expensive shaft to find it is something else. Along those lines is there a way to repair the existing shaft with new parts? Thanks

Here is a picture from my service manual. There is also a foot note of a mid year change where they are serviced by complete replacement rather than taking it apart. So the parts to repair are probably long gone. Anyone had to do one of these? Looks like the suggestion is to pull the steering gear bolts and drop the gear so you have clearance to get the shaft out and in.

That looks like a lot of GM vehicles use including some down here in Aus. The only problem I have found with them is the rubber boot cracks up and lets the grease escape but even then not fail. I would think your local auto dismantler would have several in his inventory that are very usable.

Had the same problem with my Yukon. The problem is that over time the slip joint looses its lubrication. I removed my shaft and disassembled it and lubed the splines. That cured the problem and that has been over 10 years ago.
