I still use 10W-30 in my old Chevys. Using an equivalent synthetic is okay.

Non synthetic oil is fine for older cars as it has the same additive package as full synthetic.

SOME of the synthetic base stocks do actually enhance the action of the additives in the oil.
In particular, the anti-wear additives zinc and phosphate.

Because the levels of these are now limited (no higher than 900 ppm zinc in any oil 10w-30 or lighter for example), there may be some benefit to using high quality synthetic oils.
And in my opinion NO dipper lubricated Chev should have anything heavier than a 10W-30 in it.

So I use a brand name synthetic, and it's pretty light. 🙂

By mistake I grabbed a container of full synthetic in place of regular oil the last time I changed the oil in the 38. It hasn't been a lot of miles yet but so far nothing different than before. With synthetic oil being a better lubricant than regular oil I'll probably keep using it. I use Walmart house brand. It meets the same standard as the high price stuff. Around here the Walmart house brand synthetic is the same price as the name brand regular oil so there's no extra cost to using it.

In our area it is becoming difficult to find conventional oil. Most are either a synthetic blend or full synthetic.

I completely agree with the advice to never go heavier than 10W-30 on these splash/dipper lubrication engines.
