Hello friends,

I’m curious as to what this sprial springy insert is for. This a wheel bearing dust cover. It is from my 1940 Chev Special Deluxe 4 door. The front brakes have been modified (not by me) to use 1953 era Bendix brakes (if that is relevant). Just curious what the function is for the squirrelly insert.

Thanks,

Dick Martin

It was used for static suppression when a radio was installed. Surprised to see them, they usually got tossed on a bearing repack decades ago.

Thanks! I’ve seen other caps without these, but didn’t know if it was critical. Clearly not. :)
