I am working on a 1928 speedster. I need new emergency brake linings. I am confused on two issues with the linings. The metal brake band that the brake lining is attached to is 1 inch wide. As, I understand the rear brake material is 1 1/4 inch wide that Gary Wallace offers for sale. Gary also has a rear brake lining adjustment gauge. I would like to know more about what the gauge looks like, has anyone used one before and how to use it? Why are the brake lining so wide compared to the metal brake band width? I would think having excess brake lining would make the brake material lopsided in the sense it is not attached to the metal brake band. Why have excess material?

This is a conundrum for me as the Filling Station appears not to offer the brake lining tool for sale.

Thanks for your input and help.

My repair manual shows the band and the brake linings are the same width.
The manual also shows the emergency brake adjustment.

I might have some 1 inch lining material. Shoot me a PM if you want me to check thickness, etc.

Some years back both the '28, and '29 brake adjusting jig diagrams were posted on this site. There wasn't any actual dimensions but if you know the diameter of the brake shafts that would give the scale of the tool. Not that hard to make one out of 3/4" thick plywood. Or in reality there was also a brake adjustment brochure posted that may make that tool obsolete.
