What is the best way to clean the inside and outside of a mechanical fuel pump before rebuilding it?

I glass bead blast them. Others use carburetor cleaning solvents.

I have seen bi carb soda used in a "glass bead" unit, not as harsh on the alloy leaving a smoother finish.

Also, if any media remains it will simply dissolve where sand or glass bead might find its way somewhere that could be destructive. I use soda for carburetor work also.
