I would like to add a fuel filter somewhere on my engine. The new supply of fuel pumps with a glass bowl and screen from The Filling Station is one solution. The other is to add an inline fuel filter (Filling Station FS-607 AC) just before the fuel pump with a changeable element. The fuel pump on the car does not have a glass bowl with screen. I do have a Durex Gasoline Filter Unit #986640 but I do not want to install it above the manifolds. What would be the most correct for a 1950 with a 216 engine?

Install it in front of the carb. just as the instructions in the kit say.

The angle fitting is used on engnes eqoipped with an automatic choke.

I installed two on my 41. One is a glass inline filter prior to the pump where the line runs past the firewall. It is easy to see to inspect but unless you are looking down at the spot it is placed you will not see it. Second is the stock location for the 41 just before the carb.

Is this overkill, possibly. Does not hurt performance. Does the one prior to the carb look 'cool and original' yes. Biggest advantage I have found is that when attempting to try and figure out why the car will not start we can see if fuel has reached the pump and if it has reached the carb.

I have found that having an old car is a constant project that is never done. I think that is a good thing. Keeps me learning new things. Having two from different eras is just a form of higher education.

I have two problems with the Durex Gasoline Filter. First, they do not make replacement filter elements for it. Second, I just do not like the idea of possible fuel leaking right over the manifolds. I probably will go with the fuel pump with the glass bowl and screen set-up.

Carter glass bowl fuel filters show up fairly frequently on ebay.

Look for one with a ceramic filter. No, to my knowledge, the ceramic filter is not being reproduced; but set it in a tray of white vinegar overnight to clean one.

With any glass bowl filter, use either a thick cork or thick rubber (ethanol friendly) material for the bowl to housing gasket. The gasket NEEDS to be compressible.

Carter painted the zinc housing red (have seen two different shades, bright and medium). The steel bowl support were electroplated with white zinc.

Most original installations were right at the carburetor using an all-thread fitting.
