. To be original, my old Chevy van did not offer a tail pipe. Driving a few miles, the inside filled up with carbon monoxide and my face turned blue. Since I drive my old heaps to meets and on tours rather than trailering and show only how many points will I get docked for making it driveable?. . First photo is a 1927 passenger car lube chart that shows a short tail pipe. I need one that blows the exhaust out the side behind the rear wheel. The second photo is an original muffler on a 4 cylinder Chevy in a museum that obviously never had a tail pipe.
. What do the Judges recommend I should do so I can both drive and show? .

VCCA judges with the knowledge of old trucks are a rare "birds". So authenticity is not always applied in judging. Items installed for safety can be requested from the Judging Committee. Some like seat belts, extra mirrors, lights that are installed in a manner consistent with the year of the vehicle are generally overlooked in judging. Even if there is few point deduction it almost always does not matter in any award or recognition. So my suggestion is add a tailpipe and display the vehicle.

. Hi Chip, Thank you for the suggestion. I thought of switching parts on the show ground but that is not always possible. I like to keep 'em original but they can't always show & go. Over 50 years ago I was towing a cat trailer with my Sedan Delivery and tried to merge into the right land. I realized that mirrors and directional signals were necessary. .

A bit of sheet metal fab work, a large hose clamp, & bailing wire. I can envision a slip on muffler extension with tailpipe that could be added or removed in the field. I had a '57 Chevrolet in my youth with '59 Exhaust pipes bringing the mufflers to each side along the sills. I could pull the mufflers off for racing in about 1- 2 minutes.
