I needed a replacement starter for a 1929 chevy. The original starter was marked 714. The replacement starter I got is marked 734. Are these starters the same? Will it work?

The 734 is for a 1934 Master car or a 1934 truck. I doubt if it will work,

Gene is right it won't work. What is wrong with yours? I have some extra 714l parts.

They look the same size. Why don't you think it it will work? Is the gear different? I've never worked on this old of a vehicle, so it's new to me

If my memory is good the gear end of the 714 and 734 starters are different. They look similar but are different.

Compare the two of them, especially the gear. If they are the same, the starter will work. The Master parts book says that the main barrel of the starter is the same from '29-'37. Someone probably built the starter out of various parts and the barrel still has the tag from its original application. The gear for '29 is the same from 4 cylinder models through '33 plus '34 Standard.

everything on the two starters appeared to be the same. I installed it and it worked (I got lucky). The chevy started but I still have other problems to work on. One step at a time. thank you to everyone for your input and sharing your experience.

Seems that Mike was correct. Sometime in the starters history an earlier gear end was installed on later main housing. Sometimes a person lucks out.

I didn't look for other parts that could be shared by the '29 and '34 starters. I did check the armature, and they are different. When I saw the info on the main housing or barrel, It was easy to see what had happened. It's better to have a working starter with the wrong number than to have one that doesn't fit and has to be returned.
I recently had to combine parts from '35 and '37 starters to get one that would work.
