I seem to remember either recommendations or an ad for vintage car insurance companies on VCCA. It is almost time for me to renew my 36 Chevy insurance, so I would like to compare costs for insurance. Can anyone recommend a car insurance company to me? Thank you.

There are multiple companies to consider: Grundy, Taylor, Hagerty, American Collectors. Plus many "regular" auto insurance companies (GEICO, State Farm, Progressive) have programs or affiliations to insure collector cars.

Everyone seems to have their favorite.

As a member of the VCCA, Hagerty Insurance does offer you a 5% discount on your vehicle insurance.

I've had Grundy for some years now. I've had one claim and it went very smoothly. Had Hagerty been affiliated with the club at the time I'd have probably gone with them.

Hagerty Insurance has Guaranteed Value. The value you place on your vehicle and pay your premiums on is the amount paid IF your ride should suddenly disappear off the planet. Of course the value must be agreed upon from Hagerty. Also, the VCCA offer does not apply to members from CA, MA and TN. You know who you are!

The company we use for all our insurances (business, homeowners, personal, etc.) are who we use for our 67 Cougar and will use for our 28 truck once done and on the road. I'm guessing because we hold multiple policies with them that the rate is less than if we had the car insured by itself with Hagerty or the like.
They required that I had a professional assessor look at the car and provide a written statement of the car's value based on market value, condition, options, etc.
We are covered for that written amount, minus our deductible of course.
Which reminds me I maybe should have a new assessment done as I know values have gone up.
Never had to file a claim on that car but have no reason to believe they wouldn't provide. They have treated us above and beyond over the years on several occasions without problem or dispute.

I have been using Hagerty. Never had to file a claim. I can say they offed the best prices for the coverage. They where vary easy to work with on the phone for setting up an reviewing my policy.

I have found that having an old car is a constant project that is never done. I think that is a good thing. Keeps me learning new things. Having two from different eras is just a form of higher education.

I also have Hagerty with no claims. My agent for the normal cars, suggested them.

The cost of any insurance is directly driven by the level of risk and a amount of exposure for the insurance company.

For a "regular" vehicle that is driven frequently the liability exposure is much higher than a classic car. We do not drive these classic vehicles very much or in higher risk scenarios such as a daily commute.

The primary cost drive for classic vehicle insurance is the guaranteed value coverage.

Agreed. When I was researching insurance for my 38 Grundy was a bit cheaper than Hagerty so I went with them and have been with them since. There wasn't much difference in the premium but it was less. I've since put the 62 on the policy when we had it and now the 53. As I mentioned above I had one claim so far when the 62 got a monster door ding on a tour. The adjuster was prompt, polite and more than generous with his assessment to the point where I was able to get a couple other issues fixed as well with very little out of pocket.

I have had JC Taylor for the last 50+ years. I had one minor claim and was handled well. Other friends of mine had JC Taylor with major claims and they were satisfied with the out comes also.

I've also had JC Taylor over 50 years. Had two major claims. Was handled very, very well. I've never compared prices.

I have Hagerty insurance. A great company never had an issues. My 55 1st series was totaled the week, I was scheduled to take possession after a three year frame off restoration. A claim was filed and I did received a check for the full guaranteed value without major delays or issues. I currently have Hagerty for my current ride and the company still remains a Rock Star for me.

I recently switched to Hagerty because they have more liberal rules for how you can use your vehicle. After talking with every other well known company, I learned that they didn't want me to take my truck on errands such as a trip to the lumber yard or hardware store.
No one wanted a driver under 25 years of age. This one baffled me so I asked the person "where is the next generation of old car enthusiasts coming from if you can't drive an old car until you are 25 years old"? None of them had an answer for this.
My Granddaughters are 21, 19, and 17 years old. They have been driving My Model Ts since they could see through the steering wheel. Recently they have all learned to operate a standard transmission in my 1935 Chevy Coupe and even the 1936 1-1/2 ton truck. Neav is getting pretty good at double clutching.
Hagerty is OK with young people driving a few times a year, as part of their regular coverage. I opted to pay a little more so that all of the girls are good to drive as often as they want. They live 14 hours away and visit only 2 or 3 times a year but I just didn't want any issues if something happened while one of them was driving.
I'm paying around $600 per year for 5 vehicles.
I have never filed a claim on a collector vehicle policy. I have never heard of a bad experience with any of the major companies.

Mike
