So I swapped a very tired old 4 speed out of my 41 suburban and have a 3 speed out of a 46 pickup (mostly to be syncronized). Everything went ok till I hook up the driveshaft to the tranny. The 2 yolks have slightly different size u-joint bearing caps. One is .96 inch and the other is 1 inch. Any ideas about a source for one of these combination u-joints? Checked locally and what I could find on line and most are bigger. Thanks! Jim

This might sound blasphemous, but if you use a u-joint with bearings that have an outside diameter of .96 inch, you could wrap the bearings going into the 1 inch yoke with .002 inch shim stock, thus increasing the OD of those bearings to 1 inch.

there is a correct complete u joint for the 3 speed in your truck. Check with Bob at Marxparts in Wisconsin. He will probably have one.

I sent Bob a message and will see what he has. In the meantime, I took my time and ground down a 1 inch cap to .96 and it seems to be straight and tight. Will try that but still would like to get a new joint. Thanks all!

I was surprised there wasn't any interest in that Advance Design 4 speed truck transmission for exactly that application. He probably has hauled it off to the scrap yard by now.
