I HAVE 9 IN. OF PLAY IN STEERING WHEEL TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT BEFORE PITMAN ARM MOVES? HAVE DONE ADJUSTMENTS PER MANUAL WITH NO CHANGES. DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Search Chat for “loose steering”. There are hundreds of posts about checking all the suspension and steering parts as well as rebuilding the steering gear box.
You are going to ned a sector shaft and bushings for sure and possily the worm shaft. Note that the Master is not the same steering gear as found in the Master Deluxe.
I needed a steering sector shaft for my 1939 Master Deluxe. I found an NOS shaft on eBay. My comment is to talk to the seller and make sure what you are getting is what you want. Remove the part you have, make a few measurements and ask the seller for the same measurements. I purchased what I thought was the right shaft, it had a box that said 1939 sector shaft, but the actual shaft turned out to be a shaft for a 1950's GM car. So, just be careful, you can spend $100 and waste a lot of time otherwise. Good Luck, Mike
Some steering box rebuilders, with certain models will chrome the shaft to restore it to the proper diameter. I mention this in case you can't find the part you need.
I would like to add that adjusting the steering box sector shaft on my 38 proved to be very frustrating. However once I got it right, it yielded a steering system that is a pleasure to drive. I found this very surprising for the era in which it was designed and made.
