I have a need for a new axle on a 28 and found a 29. Will it work on a 28?

The Filling Station sells a replacement rear axle. They claim it fits all cars and 1/2 ton pickups 1925 to 1929. Years 1930 and 1931 are different part number.

I could be wrong but I believe Ted is looking for a complete rear axle assy or at least a torque tube and differential assy as the ring and pinion has failed.

A few years ago, the ring and pinion gears in my '28 1/2 ton truck took a dump (broke teeth). The previous owner had the gear backlash adjusted to around .250", when it should've been adjusted to .010"!

Note to self: inspect EVERYTHING on a 'new to me' vehicle before going on a drive!

Luckily, my friend George Childs had a spare 1925 torque tube with differential parts attached in his garage. After cleaning the steel shavings out of my '28 rear axle housing, the unit from George bolted right in and by now I've put over 2000 miles on it.

Soooooo, it looks like the '25 - '28 units will work. I don't know about a '29.

Steve is correct, I’m asking about the complete assembly fitting from a 29 to a 28. Need to know if the dimensions are correct like length of torque tube, driveshaft, and width of the spring perch retainers.

The 2 drive shafts are about 2" different in length.

Hi, what did you end up doing about the axle you needed for your 1928 Chevy truck and is it a 1 ton truck?

I found another 28 car rear fairly close and will be going to pick it up. The 1/2 ton truck that I am working on has a car rear axle.

Chevy B, thanks for your reply and good to know. I could easily cut the torque tube and the driveshaft down if needed on a 29 but did find a 28 complete rear close by and will be using it.

At least for the cars the '28 torque tube and drive shaft are about 1-1/2" longer than the '29. Unlike the car models that were changed at the beginning of the year the truck models were changed in mid year. So there was an early and late '28 truck (and brake system). I believe the early '28 truck rear end was the same as the '27 car and had 2 actuating rods on the rear end itself and no front brakes. If you can determine the approximate manufacturing date of the truck that would be helpful. If you start mix and matching parts from several different vehicles you might end up with something that just wont stop.

Someone had installed a '29 rear end into my friends '30 coach before he got it. You couldn't safely take it over about 25 mph because it just wouldn't stop. I sourced a '30 rear end and now it is as safe of a car as it can be with original brakes.

Some pictures of the parts you are working on would be helpful.
