I have recently disassembled my engine block and cylinder head, and I need guidance on which openings or passages on both components should remain clear and which ones should be sealed. Specifically, I would like to know the intended configuration for both the engine block and cylinder head.

If you dont want overheating issues you dont want any opening or passage way blocked, there is probably a heap of crud around the back of the block and low down the side that needs to come out while you can get at it.

Just got done cleaning the head. Not as much buildup as I thought there would be. The block is next. Thanks for the info

Knock all the freeze plugs out and start fishing around with a coat hanger and pressure washer until it all runs clear and the drain plug also runs free.

I plan on using my borescope to see how much buildup I have. Thanks for the help.

Many automotive machine shops have equipment that cleans the inside of the engine as clean as the outside. I had this done to my 1936 head and was amazed at the result.
I'm sorry I don't know what the equipment is called or how it works.
