1948 Fleetmaster. 3-speed column shift without vacuum assist. Shifting is functional, but it's sloppy. I believe that I am missing the bushing that is at the bottom of the shift shaft along with the spring. I have a number of questions: 1. I see two different types of bushing listed at Chevs of the 40s. One is nylon, and the other is brass. Which would be functionally the best option?
2. I can't find a source for the spring; any ideas about where to find one?
3. Can I replace the bushing by removing the U bolt and support assembly from the column and not remove the column or shifter shaft? What's the PIA factor in replacing the bushing?
4. There also seems to be a lot of slop in the far connection of the lever that comes off the shift shaft as it connects to the rod farther down the line. I don't know what is normal. Please advise.
Please reference attached photos.
Thank you. I am new to working on this type of column shift mechanism.
