Hey Guys! My 28 Roadster is a tad saggy on the passenger side. After inspection I noticed 7 leaves on the drivers side and 6 on the passenger side. The Filling station has an 8 leaf rear spring. My question is should it be 7 or 8? I know six is not right,

If you go into "the old car manual online project" it gives the specifications for most of the mechanical components of the '28 Chevrolet. If I remember correctly the coupe and the roadster were 7 leaves for the rear springs. The coach and sedan were 8 leaves because it could have rear passengers. Don't remove the "recoil, or rebound plates" that look like helper springs. Those were on '28, and '29 cars, and up to '31 for trucks. In '30 the cars went to single action shock absorbers.

The 1928 parts book list the rear leaf spring for a roadster/coupe series AB as having 6 leaves.

Other than the filling station, who supplies the springs? I f I need to purchase from them can a leaf be removed? I am assuming that the 8 leaf spring would be too stiff.

. Most spring companies can make spring leaves if you provide length, width, thickness, arch and end configuration such as rolled. It's difficult to find 1-3/4" wide springs in stock today. When you remove your rear springs, either add or remove a leaf so both springs are the same. If your springs are just saggy from over use, you can get them re-arched. Coil springs are more difficult to have made than leaf springs. Newer trucks with leaf springs use wider thicker but less leaves. One year the Chevy II had only one leaf in the rear spring but no torque tube. Too much axle wrap caused problems.

I referenced the wrong manual earlier. What I was thinking of is the '28 specification guide at the GM Heritage center web site. It has a lot of useful information including how many leaves in the springs for the different models.
