Recently, I was working on my 1939 Master Deluxe steering. I purchased a sector shaft, which turned out to be the wrong one. It came in a 1939 - 1948 Chevy box, that is all that is 1939. I want to determine what it is for and maybe someone else is looking for a good NOS shaft like this one. I looked thru a 1929 1950 Chevy Master Parts Cat, but could not find the casting number 5662683 in it. Does anyone have any experience finding part numbers like this, or know where or how to look for it? I looked over eBay and found some shafts that look like it. They were in the early 1950's, but I need to know more exactly what this is. I appreciate any help, thanks. Mike

While you can get a lot of information for free in this forum, sometimes the info that you REALLY need is only available from the right person. This is what "The World's Best Chevrolet Club" is all about!
My best guess is that the part number for the assembled sector is completely different than the number on the cast housing.
I just looked at the ‘29-‘54 parts catalog. I agree that the listing is a little confusing. Part 609941 should have fit your car. Unless someone had installed a Master 85 steering gear box. Stranger things have happened!
I learned early on when buying ebay parts for my 38 that what's "on" the box very often has no relation to what's "in" the box. While my time machine broke a few years back so I can't go back to see what actually happened, I suspect the part that came in that box was put on a vehicle and the box was re-used to house a different part and never marked because the person knew what was in the box. When the "knowing" person was no longer around, the box with the wrong part sat on a shelf until everything was sold at auction following their death. The new owner, trying to make some money lists it as what's on the box, not knowing it's wrong, and the unsuspecting new owner is stuck trying to figure out what they actually bought. I have a number of parts in my garage that I bought early on in the journey of my 38's restoration that I have no idea what they fit.
