Hello

I live in Florida and twice a year we experience a large swarm of "love bugs" which seem to stick to paint like super glue. Does anyone have any tips or removal product advice?

Thanks

Preventive maintenance. Clean all the glass (windshield, Headlights, ect) and coat with "RainEx". Use a good wax and but a liberal coat on all the painted surfaces and the chrome such as bumpers, ect.

At least this gives you a fighting chance of removing them.

the love bug mess reminded me of an experience our family experienced. about 30 years ago, the misses talked me into taking the 3 daughters(son wasn't born yet) to disney world. at the time, our primary source of travel was a 53 Caddy Hearse(loved the old girl-put a 66 455ci olds in her--got about 5 mpg at interstate speeds). packed the kids and lea and several cases of Blatz in the old cadaver-mover and headed south. crossed into fla after camping the Atlantic beaches. we hit a swarm of those love bugs just south of Jacksonville and had to pull off I95 and clean the windshield in oder to see the road. When we got back to Maryland a week of so later, it took a weekend to rid the Hearse of those critters. used Bug and Tar remover--took a couple cans.Thje Floridians may deal with the love bugs--up here in western Md mountains, the whitetail deer do more damage top the vehicles. mike

For trips one easy way to deal with them is to put Saran type wrap on the parts up front (don't block air flow to motor) all you have to do is peal the wrap off and off come the bugs. Some even put it on the windshield and every now and then they stop and replace it with a fresh piece, sorta like the tear offs the NASCAR cars use on their windshilds (except they use multi-layers instead of one at a time).

I was thinking of covering the front of the hood on my '50 with kitchen plastic klinging sheeting. Then just peel it off when I get to GJ.They use something simular to that for new cars in transit.

I have heard that you can buy a spray can of a chemical that you spray all over the front of the vehicle and the bugs do not stick to anything that has been sprayed, And It washes off with water. I thought I seen It In our local auto parts store. I will check and see If I can find out more about It. chevy

RV people swear that Bounce sheets that have been soaked in water with wash the bugs off with little to no effort.

Good luck.

You can also try using a spray-on cooking oil. "PAM" is one. Just spray the front of your vehicle before you leave and then wipe it off when you get to your destination. I've used it when delivering new trucks. Works well.

And for the difficult ones my wife makes "Scrubbies" they cut the bugs with a minimum of trouble, just grab a pail of cold water and dip the scrubbie and rub!
