I’m going through a ‘51 Styleline Special which sat for decades.
I’m using the shop manual and going through maintenance procedures.
Part of this is draining and refilling the transmission and rear differential.
A question I have is do either of them have a small vent hole in them?
In other cars I’ve had there have been small (clean it out with a paper clip) size vent holes.
If so, where would they be located on both the trans and diff. housing?
Thanks yet again….
I hope to be driving her this coming week.

One other question: The road draft tube support is broken off; is that really required? As part of this second question, it looks like the bolt on the oil pan used to hold that draft tube support is leaking oil. Would it be prudent to just remove the support? I currently have the draft tube out for cleaning and crack repair. Judging from how hard it was to get out it seems pretty well supported on its own.

There is no vent for the transmission.
There shoud be a vent on the right side (top) of the differential housimg.
Bracket for tube not necessary - often brokem.

Thank You, sir.
I may remove the bracket after I replace the draft tube.
I would think you might well get a better seal on that particular bolt without the bracket spanning the lip of the oil pan mounting flange.

If you do not find the vent on the right side of the differntial tube I would not be surprised as there were many running changes in 1951. Some were due to the Korean war.

I don't know if this helps, but here is a photo of my 1950 rear axle vent. It's probably not the same as 1951, but at least you can see what it looks like.

Thank You.
Is that it on the driver’s side axle tube?
It looks exactly like my ‘51.
It seems to just be a vent cap that spins freely.
It does not appear to be clogged up; just some decades-old oily crud.
Is it best to just clean off the outside and otherwise let it be?

Yes, it is on the driver's side. Yes, the vent cap spins freely. Other than wiping it with a rag, I did nothing to it. I don't know if there is anything else that should be done to it. Maybe Gene Schneider could comment on servicing it.
