I have a 1923-1924 engine in my speedster. The water pump shaft moves in and out about a quarter of inch. I assume that's not correct? But it does not leak!! It's the 6 bolt water pump the other I have are the 1928 4 bolt pumps. Is there anything I can do? It doesnt really seem to over heat. Water stays just a hair over the fins in the radiator.

The horizontal movement of the water pump shaft is controlled by the pulley to body gap. I suspect that the pulley has moved on the shaft. If not too worn a little Loctite threadlocker on clean dry parts can solve the problem. Woe to the next guy if he doesn't know it was done and that a little heat is needed to release the Loctite grip.

Be careful not to get too much Loctite on the shaft as it will lock the shaft to the housing. It may not be a disaster as heating will allow movement.

Thanks Chipper I'll have to try that! I knew it wasn't rite. The pump looks to have been repaired and a little ruff. I may look for a replacement later.
