Looking for a nice radiator stone guard for my 1930 Roadster. Prices on eBay and parts places seem a tad crazy high.

Any stone guard for 1930 is an aftermarket item. 1931 is the first for a Chevrolet accessory stone guard.

Just wondering what I can use then, to protect the radiator, which is in perfect condition.

A gravel screen will only protect for larger rocks and pebbles. They have a much stronger mesh than window screen. Driving in reverse is not a good option. The aftermarket screen might be your best option even if not an original accessory. Mounting might require drilling holes or brackets that would be expensive to remove later.
