If it's like my 53 left is Off, middle is on/run and right is start. Edit: It seems it's not like my 53. Here is the owner's manual: http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyowner/49om04.htm

On my 1950 Chevy the straight up position was to energize the ignition. There was a push button on the left side of the dash to engage the starter.
The counter-clockwise position (left) was to turn off the ignition and remove the key. The lock cylinder was locked in that position.
The clockwise (right) position would also turn the ignition off. You could remove the key. The difference was that the lock cylinder was not locked. You could use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder to the vertical position and turn on the ignition.
If I remember correctly you could remove the key with the lock in the vertical position. You could use a screwdriver to turn the cylinder to the right to stop the engine. The cylinder would remain unlocked. You could not turn the cylinder to the left position without the key.
If you check your 1951 Owner's Manual I think you find that your lock operates the same way.

Correct - when the key is straight up and down the ignition is on,

My 48 has the 3 position switch. It has a tang on the bottom of it to turn the switch. No screw driver needed. This topic has a picture of the ignition switch. https://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/289717/post/last/#LAST

Attached is the Ignition Switch page from the 1949 Owners Manual. Something I had heard a while back was when you leave the ignition turned to the right and remove the key, this was called the "valet" position. You could have your car parked and retrieved by a valet WITHOUT leaving him your keys.

That was done rather leaving your keys for the valet to open the trnck with.
