A friend has a shop and was converting a "53" (claimed to be such by the customer) to 12v for a customer. It has a 54 grill and tail lights. I told him his customer was wrong because it has the 54 gear on it. After checking, the VIN shows it to be a 53 Bel Air and his customer (who inherited it from her father) says she knows nothing about any work being done on the car. The unit number shows it being the 133198th vehicle made in St. Louis that model year which seems late in the run to me. Is it possible they ran out of 53 grills and tail lights so put 54s on instead?

It wouldn’t be the first 53 I’ve seen with the 54 tail lights, and I believe the whole front clip for a 54 would go on a 53 without any problem’s. Someone may correct me on the last part.

1953 and 1954 clips will interchange but the 1953 bumper must be used with the 1953 clip and the 1954 bumper with the 1954 clip..
Tail lights will also interchang'

The 1853 wheels fit a 1953 hub cap because the wheel has the retaining clips and the 1943 wheels have the humps to retain th hub cap. For the BelAir the wheel covers are different but will fit either wheel.

The 1954 trunk lid had the smaller emblem.

The 1953 serial number will read C53xxxx and the 1954 C54xxx

The 1953 front door armms rests were just the short little ones and the 1954 Bel Air had the large built in type.

1953 will have the short muffler like the previouus years and 1954 the long muffler like the following years
If the engine is original the 1953 will have the old valve cover and a 1954 the four screws on the side valve cover;

GM NEVER NEVER us left over parts or the next years prats on the assembly line unles it was noted in their bullitins.
