how hard is it to rebuild the steering column in a 50 car (standard shift), mine is going to need it , i have tried to adjust by loosening nut and turning screw but no matter where i turn screw cant get the hard spot out when wheel is straight . i have a couple of extra boxes with X on them and know they are second design. car does need a wheel alignment next month so am waiting for that before i adjust the drag link to straighten out the steering wheel . any answers greatly appreciated thanks

I assume the you mean steering gear and not column.

You can install a X type wihout making any changes.

GENE all the boxes i have do the same thing lot of play and a hard spot when turning the wheel from left to right . no matter what i do to the adjusting screw i assume that there is something worn out inside the steering box. or am i not adjusting the screw on the side of the box where the sector shaft is correctly thanks

Remember that there are 2 adjustments to the steering gear that must be made in the correct sequence with the steering linkage disconnected. You also need to adjust the length of the steering connecting rod to center the sector on the high spot of the worm gear.

Section 9 of the 49-54 shop manual describes the process.
