I seem to have my wiring mixed up somehow. When I pull out the light switch to the first position the cowl, tail, and headlamps come on. When I pull it out to the second position, the cowl lights go off but headlamps and tail lamps stay on. Shouldn't it be just cowl and tail lamps on the first stop, and tail and headlamps on the second stop? The owner's manual doesn't go into that.

You are right.
Here is a nice diagram made by The Filling Station.

Some vehicles the cowl and headlights are on at the same time but even then cowl/tail are 1st click, 2nd click may turn cowl off but head and tail should turn on. Use Mihaly's diagram and the system should work as designed.

Thanks. The diagram was a big help, but I found it unclear on a couple of things. It refers to "park" lights. I assume that is the cowl lights. But I don't see headlamps referred to anywhere. What am I missing?

I believe the wire from the dimmer switch is the one you are looking for.
