I'm replacing the muffler and need some advice. The muffler we took out was a cylindrical shape 6 inches in diameter and about 18 inches long.
Looking for advice for a replacement?? What kinda muffler do you have??
They're making a new tailpipe too! Where does your tailpipe come out the back??
Any advice and or pics would be greatly appreciated...thanks!!

Originally the exhaust outlet on 490 models was underneath the vehicle, at the outlet of the muffler, there was no tailpipe to the rear of the vehicle,

Here are a couple of pics of our 1922 Chev 490 Touring. The muffler is about 19 inches long and the tailpipe is about 11 inches. Hope this helps. Mike

So through Gary Wallace Old Chevy Parts I ordered what seems to be an exact match to the original exhaust system!! He knows a.company who makes them!! It was $275 plus $60 for shipping which I thought was a fair price!!

It has a spot where the flex pipe from the carburetor hooks to and the tailpipe looks like it sticks out behind the vehicle and aims to the ground!!

Now my question is...should I hook up the flex pipe?? Apparently the flex pipe would help in cold or wet weather!!

My suggestion is yes, hook up the flex tube. Warm air will help the carb atomize the fuel better.

A quick story. The previous owner of the engine that was in Lurch (a '28 engine), ran that engine for a while without the flex tube. The carb actually frosted over and the engine stopped. ;-)

Cheers, Dean
