Hi All! My `64 Belair has self adjusters on the rear that over adjust & I want to dis-connect them but theres no slot in the backing plate if I need to adjust?? Is this a defect from GM? Theres 2 indentations in the backing plate, not knock outs & not even close to the star wheel, I don't want to torch a slot so whats the best way to dis-able the self adjusters & leave on backing plate? Thanks!

If they are adjusting too tight I SUSPECT SOME OF THE LEFT SIDE PARTS ARE ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND RIGHT SIDE PARTS ON THE LEFT SIDE.
I have never heard of this pronlem before and was in a Chevrolet dealership from 1950-1977 and in the general auto fied after that.
Are you sure thar there is no brake fluid leaking on the linings or a leakey axle seal.

I have never heard of or seen backing plates with no slots. That does not mean they do not exist, just that I have never ecountered them. If you disable the self-adjusting mechanism how will you adjust the brakes? You can do that by removing the cable.
I do know that if you add the self-adjusting hardware to a pre-62 car you need to add a slot on the left side backing plates. I have added slots by drilling 3 5/16" holes very close together and cutting out the little bit of material between them.

I found the adjusting slot, it`s on the front of the drum???

I hate those! Lots of vehicles that have rear disc brakes with a small internal drum parking brake have the adjuster in the face of the rotor. What a pain! You have to remove the wheel to make the adjustment.
From a historical perspective the access to the front adjusters on my ‘37 Chevy was through the face of the brake drum.
