VCCA Home Forums TECHNICAL - 1945 AND NEWER 1946-1948 Brake drums for a 1946 Chevy 3/4 ton truck

Have a 1946 Chevrolet 3/4 ton truck. Slowly but surely getting the brake system replaced/repaired/cleaned up. The drums are scored pretty bad and don't have enough material left to clean up. Have looked online for replacements but can't seem to find anything. Any suggestions on where I can find some or some type of solution? They are 8 lug.

Post in the Parts Wanted forum. Contact Jim Carter Tuck Parts. They have used parts and also know of other used part sources for these older Chevy's.

My guess is that your most likely solution will be a used set of drums that are not as worn as yours.

I would also have your drums measured to confirm that they are to far gone to turn. The way that these classic vehicles are used it is unlikely that you need 50,000 mile brakes. More like maybe 10,000.

Have you posted on the Stovebolt Forum? Those members are more focused on trucks and might be able to help you.

Many of the guys over at Stovebolt, modify their trucks so they have left over original parts to share with those of us who keep our trucks original.
The 1949 Parts catalog says the front drums fit only 1946 3/4 ton. Rears fit '46-'49 (possibly later) 3/4 ton.

Scored drums are not the best reason to turn drums. my shop teacher always said to turn drums if they were out of round and that scored drums only shortened the life of the linings very minimally at first, and actually added to the braking surface.
