Hopefully one of the early 4 cyl guys will chime in with an answer about removing and repair.

The shop manual should have a lot of the information that you are looking for. If you don't have one, I highly suggest that you get one. Reprints and/or CDs are available from most of the old part vendors and also on ebay.

If you are a member of the VCCA, you can contact one of the Technical Advisors for the year of your vehicle.

The Advisors are listed in each edition of the Generator and Distributor (fondly called the G&D) monthly magazine.

This is one of the many benefits that come with club membership.

The generator on an 1918 490 is attached to the front engine plate by 4 bolts at the front of the engine pointing backwards, the generator is gear driven off the timing gears of the engine, timing the camshaft with the crankshaft, and the generator.
The generator is the source of the distributor timing with a drive mechanism geared off the back of the generator,( or a sprocket and magneto drive chain if you have a magneto and not a distributor).

Without looking at an engine, the front timing gears are under a timing cover to retain engine oil, so if you cannot find the 4 bolts t the front plate, they may be under the timing cover,

If you can find a generator cut out ( circuit breaker) on top of the square generator, it will be worth removing and checking its operation first, before removing the generator.

Many thanks guys. I was hoping that I did not need to remove timing cover and also disengage oil pump drive and cog! I suspect the problem is worn out brushes but ti work at these with generator in place seems impossible even with cover off. Ant more suggestions welcome. I have a 490 manual but it does not cover this particular problem! Wtll join up and get a tech expert as well. Thxs Eliza 36
