The generator on an 1918 490 is attached to the front engine plate by 4 bolts at the front of the engine pointing backwards, the generator is gear driven off the timing gears of the engine, timing the camshaft with the crankshaft, and the generator.
The generator is the source of the distributor timing with a drive mechanism geared off the back of the generator,( or a sprocket and magneto drive chain if you have a magneto and not a distributor).
Without looking at an engine, the front timing gears are under a timing cover to retain engine oil, so if you cannot find the 4 bolts t the front plate, they may be under the timing cover,
If you can find a generator cut out ( circuit breaker) on top of the square generator, it will be worth removing and checking its operation first, before removing the generator.
