I have a very nice 57 sport coupe it is a survivor car, has 62,000.00 miles
I am always concerned about what I can do to the car without altering its value as a survivor
it is a really nice car, and a real head turner

I drove it to high school in the 70s and have had it since without doing much but TLC

it does have a few cosmetic issues, original pain is pitted in areas, and a scrape on the back fender and the stainless is good but tarnished and some dings

I have always wanted to re-do the chrome, but I worry about decreasing its value

any suggestions on how to keep this car as a survivor and not harm the status of the car

Paul

There is an increasing number of old car enthusiasts and buyers that appreciate survivors. I have a few of them and they get as much attention as others when displayed. They are only original or preserved original once. When upgraded or refinished some significant history is destroyed.

It is your car so you with what you want but considering you know its history I would continue as you have been keeping it maintained properly with all its blemishes.
As for judging I wont comment as I havent been interested in that part of old car ownership.

Paul, welcome to the VCCA website and the Judging Forum. I would like to suggest that you go to the home page of this website and under "Club Info" scroll down to the "Judging" manual and download that. You will pick up a lot of information to help you with your decision. Back in 2002 the VCCA Judging Committee initiated the Historical Preservation of Chevrolet Features (HPOCF) class as part of the judging program. This was developed specifically for the original cars that were out there. For years members with survivors would bring their beauties to a meet and not have them judged due to not being able to compete with restored cars. The HPOCF certification allows members to be recognized and awarded for keeping them historically correct. It has been a great addition to our club and I hope it will continue.

In the Judging Manual you will see the section on HPOCF and what the parameters are for certification. There are some things you can do to clean up and touch up certain parts of the car or truck. Read through it and see how the system works. You might lose a few categories by dechroming and repainting but there are percentages that are applied to the degree of the revisions that you do and still be awarded the Ovals, Boards and Tabs. Hope this helps. Send us some pictures! Steve
