Getting ready to install my four-cylinder engine and transmission back into the restored chassis of my 1928 Chevrolet coach. My question is…. ..,.Is it better to join the transmission to the engine and then hoist the complete assembly into position or….is it best to first install the transmission separately, then hoist the engine in and attach to the previously installed transmission?

My preference is to install as a single assemble unit. For me it is simple because you are only working to align mounts.
If you install the transmission first you have to support the front of the of the transmission while getting the input shaft through the clutch and into the pilot bushing and at the same time get the flywheel housing aligned.
You can do it either way and I have. It is really easy to install as a unit if you have a leveling bar on the engine hoist.

You have to install the engine and gearbox as a unit. It is impossible to install the engine in the var with the gearbox in due to the rear engine crossmember.

What ever you do do not forget the bushing that goes on the transmission before it adjoins the clutch. This is a Clutch Pilot Bushing for all 1923-1930 Chevrolet cars & trucks. Dimensions: OD .814" - ID .625". This is a sintered bronze bushing and must be soaked in oil before installation.
