Out of curiosity, when assembling bottom end, does the "open" side of the dipper face the cam or the oil line? Experience with another manufacturer says toward the cam for the splash effect on the cam, rod bearings, cylinder walls, etc, but that eliminates the oil tube from hitting the dipper with oil. Am I missing something or am I just not seeing the whole picture? Thanks for any comments, Gene

Open side of the dipper ALWAYS faces the camshaft (right side of engine viewed in the direction of travel) on 6 cylinder Chevs.
The dipper has to scoop into and pick up the oil feeding it into the rod bearing with clockwise rotation as viewed from the FRONT.

What are you working on?
If it's a 1934 or earlier engine, the ends of the oil pipes are on the LEFT side of the engine.
If it's a 1935 or later "pressure stream" engine, the ends of oil supply pipes are on the RIGHT side of the engine.

So.... if are working on a 1952 Chev for example, the open side of the dipper faces BOTH the camshaft AND the open ends of the oil pipes.
