I'm now deep into stripping my 36 Master. It was painted with lacquer some years ago, and the car was never stripped to bare metal. I'm scraping the very brittle lacquer off with a razor down to brown primer, then using a chemical strip for the rest. As this might take me a few weeks, do I need to protect the bare metal before I get ready to prime? I'll be using a self-etching epoxy primer and then acrylic lacquer top coat. The parts and main body will stay either inside my shop or in a garage after stripping. One piece of advice was to wash the bare metal with phosphoric acid before priming. I was told that I shouldn't expect too much surface rust if it's not outside. Of course, I'll use a good degreaser before I actually prime. Does that all seem like a reasonable plan? Much obliged. You can use a metal prep such as Ospho or one made by the paint companies. They are like water but put a protective coating on the metal. Then clean with soap and water, dry and use a self-etching primer, primer/sealer, filling primer and finally top coat.

If the undercoat is in excellent condition without any problems; do you really need to take it off or can you contour sand and seal and go from there?

There are some places where the paint is chipped off in large chunks or cracking, and lots of small bubbles in crevices. Where I've removed the brown primer in these areas, there's enough surface rust that I don't want to take the chance. Besides, I'm having too much fun to stop now!

Don't leave any metal bare for even a short period of time, protect it quick; rust never sleeps...

Thanks, Gator! I'm an ex-'nole, but I'll take your advice anyway. Some of my best friends are Gators. Randy
