The book says the 32 carb is a Carter W-1, there is a C or a T for car or truck casted. Did they consider a 1/2 ton pickup a truck? I believe its the same frame as a car. Thanks I think it would be the C one for a car, but dont know for sure Roger

The raised cast letter on the Carter W-1 was an indicator of manufacturing difference. The "C" indicates casting at the Bay City plant owned by Chevrolet that build Carter carburetors under contract to Carter. It does not indicate "car". The "T" indicates a truck application. After research by me and Jon Hargrove our conclusion is that it was originally used on both 1/2 ton and 1 1/2 ton trucks. I had always thought that since the drive train on the 1/2 ton trucks was the same as passenger with the exception of the freewheeling unit, that it used the same carburetor as the passenger cars. We concluded that was not correct.

Good question regarding the pickup using the car carb. In 32 there were 2 carbs used on both the car and truck so 4 different ones-an early and a late. The later carb used on both the car and pickup was a 235S W-1 Carter. I have a chart made by Chipper and Doyle Stokes posted in the G&D sometime in the early 2000's. BA,BB models 1ST used 212S and N models 222S, 222SA Later BA,BB models used a 235S all being W-1 .

The 1/2 ton would be a truck.
The trucks used different metering rods than a passenger car.
Richer or leaner ???????????

Hi rjp

Sometimes there is a number stamped into the gasket surface of the bottom flange of the carburetor.
Sometimes the number has been machined off during a refurbishing.

If the number is still there you can go to this excellent page here:

https://www.thecarburetorshop.com/CarterChevroletW1.htm

to match it up with a W-1 number.

That page also has pictures and other information that may help with identifying what you have.

Just to muddy the waters a bit:

Carter (and presumably Chevrolet) were testing a different W-1 for the 1932 trucks, Carter 247s. For some reason not apparant in the Carter documentation, the 247s number was discontinued 26 July 2032, and the 247s was given the number 222sa.

Without straining my eyes further on the small print, it appears the difference from the 222s to the 247s a.k.a. 222sa was the change of metering rod from 75-54 to 75-66.

The prints indicate that 222sa was the service replacement unit for the 222s.

Richer or leaner ???????????

Gene - metering rods:

212s - 75-49 0.056 x 0.044
222s - 75-54 0.066 x 0.062
222sa - 75-66 0.065 x 0.062
235s - 75-60 0.056 x 0.045

So the passenger rod was significantly richer than the truck rod; HOWEVER: one cannot make an assumption of the total calibration, as the main venturi of the 212s was 1 3/16 inch whereas the main venturi of the 222s was 1 1/32 inch. The smaller venturi would have significantly increased the venturi air velocity, thus effecting the calibration.

Note the rod change in the 222sa was 0.001 richer on the economy step than the rod in the 222s.
Note the rod change in the 235s was 0.001 leaner on the power step than the rod in the 212s.

This drawing from the Carter Carburetor school manual will illustrate my comment above about the increased venturi air velocity effecting calibration.

In the drawing, vacuum ports were installed in different positions of a multiple venturi, with the free ends inserted into glasses of water. The water head in the tubes above the glasses demonstrate the different pulling effect on liquid. The smaller venturi would have increased venturi air velocity.

Hi Jon

Thanks for this.

Question:
Was there ever a chart of Carter W-1 metering rod part numbers versus measurements?
I've looked for one for some time without success.

PS
One more:
Was the Main Jet size the same or different between the 212s and the 222sa?

Question number 2 - 212s, 222s, 222sa, and 235s all used main jet 120-23 (number 45 drill size).

Question number 1 - Carter, to my knowledge, never printed one.

But maybe, one might exist wink

EDIT: Maybe one of these days I will be sufficiently educated to post a table on these forums! blush
If there are 2 figures on the line, they represent High vacuum and power.
If there are 3 figures on the line, they represent High vacuum, midrange, and power
I spent an hour lining up the columns, and the forum softwhere removed spacing! mad
Maybe one of the software gurus can fix the columns.

Examples:

Rod number 49 high vacuum is 0.056 and power is 0.044
Rod number 67 high vacuum is 0.062, midrange is 0.060, and power is 0.045
