We have always had a leak between the exhaust manifold and the down pipe. The leak is in the rear of the pipe. Barely noticeable cold but noticeable once warm. When this car was built what kind of gasket if any was used between the manifold and the down pipe. We tried tightening the nuts but the rear nut seems to always loosen up slightly making this leak worse. The exhaust is able to move to allow for the engine's vibrations.

I have found that having an old car is a constant project that is never done. I think that is a good thing. Keeps me learning new things. Having two from different eras is just a form of higher education.

Is the doughnut a standard size based on the pipe?

You might want to take the remains of your old one with you. Your exhaust pipe diameter is 1 7/8". The Filling Station sells both that and 2" donuts but you should be able to get them locally. If you don't have enough of a remnant to take with you just buy both and take the one you don't need back. They're only ~$5 each.
