i don't have access to my '37 shop manual right now. Based on what I remember there should be no back and forth movement of the pinion shaft. That movement will change the gear mesh and backlash. I expect that the double row thrust bearing is worn.

There is an active VCCA Chapter in the Ohio area. I know some of the members and expect they would welcome you to VCCA and their chapter. They would know who could set up the rear axle after the bearings are replaced.

Gene is probably the most correct but there is some "set screws" that locate the pinion bearing, if these come loose for any reason the bearing will move in a for/aft situation. If this is the case check that the housing isnt worn where the bearing sits.

The pinion bearing story.
Actually there are two pinion bearings. The front is a large double row ball bearing. When it goes bad you will hear a whine type noise under pulling power. That bearing is more or less locked sin place. The rear bearing is a roller bearing and it will make a crumbling noise when deaccellerating. The most common one to requie replacing is the front. ,
The side carrier bearings wil make noise at a steady spee and kind of rumble. The sidecarrie barings support the inner end f the axle shafts so their noise is of a lower frequency.

The same front pinio bearing was uused from 1937-1954 and had some minor improvements over the years.
It was not uncommon to replace the front bearing and I would guess at least 20 percent were epaced during the llife of th car,
n the dealership it took an experianced mrchanic about two hours to do the job as the knew the short cuts.

Ofl the many Chevrlets I had, I had the bearing replaed on my 1941 at about 75,000 miles which would all typical.
