Hey guys, While cleaning the almost century old gunk off and out of my spare 3 speed trans, I found 2 long cracks in the housing! they are on the countershaft side and run vertically down the front side about 3 to 3 1/2 inches and the is horizontal through the casting numbers. I do not know if they can be welded, in the event it can't, what years are the internals interchangeable? i have found a 29/30 case but want to make sure I can stuff my gears and shafts w/o issues.

My recommendation is to compare the casting numbers of the transmission cases. If the numbers are the same the cases should accept the contents.

I have not checked the transmission casting numbers and casting dates that I have to determine which are the same. I have not checked the parts books from several years for the same part numbers to see what might be the interchanges. My understanding is that some transmission parts from 1927 with fit in a 1931 case. Some parts changed during that period as improvements were made.

My parts books show the same part number, 353300, for 1927-1930

The pictures I have seen appear that they are identical. I know on newer models GM would use the same casings for years at a time. there may be different casting numbers, but essentially the same part.

Has anyone used JB weld or other epoxies on the the trans case? If so did it hold up. I have a can of smooth on iron cement, I was thinking of giving that a try.

It has been my understanding that the 1927 - 30 transmission cases are the same. My 1928 Four Cylinder gives a different part number than 353300. My August 1930 parts book has a mark next to the part number indicating it is a part used in Four cylinder cars. So all that reinforces that the cases are essentially the same but might have a slight difference that doesn't affect the interchange.

Not knowing what caused the cracks (I might suspect frozen water) I would be afraid that patching or welding would still have a weaker casting. If one would patch, rebuild and then later find it was necessary to replace the casting there will be a significant cost in $$ and time

Good call Chipper! I will hunt down a casing all the internals were good, a little rust on the slider gears but not horrible. I guess all the greasy goo acted like cosmoline. Thank you for the time and knowledge!

I have a 28 transmission case I was going to use in a yard art project but changed my mind. I could send pictures later in the week if you are interested.
