I need some advice on how to add packing to my water pump while it is on the engine. Tools to stuff the packing in without damaging etc.

This is a good question, I was hoping someone had a trick to make this easier.

Back off the packing nut and slide away from the body as far as possible. Cut a rope type packing in 1 or 2 wrap lengths and insert. Try to make the length so there is not a gap between the ends. Use a flat bladed screw driver, dental tool or similar tool to push in on the packing working around the shaft as best you can. Leave a thread or two showing. Put the packing nut in place with a little lubricant and tighten noting how far it goes in before the nut is snug, not tight. Have done it several times. If the shaft is galled it would last too long.
