. You are asking 2 questions. Some of the first 4WD vehicles were tractors in the late 1800s. Image #1 is a Lansing tractor. .Image #2 is a 1900 electric Porsche 4WD. Image #3 shows what Avery did with your old wine corks on their 1910 4WD. FWD made only Four Wheel Drive trucks and LINN made half tracks during this time period. I imagine that GM supplied some trucks to WW1 but I don't have any documentation. GM had Silver Book 4WD options for Chevrolet trucks. See web page <http://home.znet.com/t1937/4WD.htm>. Transmission and pumpkins web page is <http://home.znet.com/c1937/RPM.htm>. Note that the 1937 Chevy with ASAM 4WD has no U-joints, just gears. .
. The second question is answered GM had contracts with military and other government agencies for a variety of vehicles. A lot are listed in Chevrolet's SPECIAL MODELS PARTS LIST. on web page <http://home.znet.com/x1937/burb.htm> . The 1933 - 34 STATION WAGON ON HALF TON CHASSIS for Nat guard became the 1935 civilian Suburban.
