I'm thinking it must be oblong shape to fit the rear tailpipe hanger which is oblong shape. Also is the tailpipe 1 7/8" diameter or smaller, maybe 1 3/4" diameter. Thanks

The last foot of the pipe is the shape of the hanger.
The tail pipe is 1 3/4 on a stick and 1 7/8 for a Power Glide. There are two different sizes for the hanger to match the pipe size.

I read somewhere that the shape was so the pipe doesn't rotate in the hanger, since it's not secured above the axle as well. Also keeps the optional exhaust deflector straight!

The only information on the shape of the end of the tail pipe is in the 1949 Engineering which states the end of the tail pipe is now oval instead of round,
It probably was done for sound as the shape of the end of the pipe and size have an effect o the sound..
An accessory exhaust deflector was not available until mid 1950.
