I have taken pan off and removed bottom of oil pump. It looks like there was a gasket there but do not see one available from filling station. Is the gasket mandatory?

The gasket is very important as well as its thickness, If I remember correctly it should be from .009" to .0i1" thick.

I have been having to make a bunch of different gaskets myself...as I rebuild just about everything on my '34 master.... go to the auto parts store and by some sheets of gasket material in varies thicknesses.... then when making gaskets... cut a piece of gasket material that is a little bigger than the shape you need... hold it up to the part. and trace the outer shape.. then the inner shape... you can use paper or thin cardboard to make these first few measurements, until you get it right, then transfer it to your gasket material... using scissors, razor knife and hole punches...that has been working good for me...

I use an 8 ounce ball peen hammer to make gaskets. Just lay the gasket material on the machined face and tap the perimeter. Use the ball end to make the holes. Then use both the flat face and the ball end to cut the inside opening.

1/64 was the thinnest I could find. Cut out and looks good. 👌

I have used notebook paper and printer paper as gaskets on oil pumps when other gasket material wasn't the proper thickness.
