I have a 1931 Chevy Cabriolet and it has an oil leak out of what my mechanic calls the Rear Spring Seat on the differtial. It drips onto the spring. He is not clear on why this is leaking and how to fix it. I'm not mechanical and need some ideas from you experts. Thanks, Paul Zucker, paul@zuckersystems.com

The spring seat clamps around the diff. housing. It rotates slightly on the housing as the spring flexes. There is a grease fitting at this location to prevent wear.If gear oil is leaking from the diff. at this point it would indiacate that the spring seat has worn a hole in the housing. The lower half of the seat could be unbolted and the housing inspected.Removing the nuts from the U bolts will be necessary. If the housing would be worn thru enough to leak breakage would be possible.

Another possibility is the rivet that holds a arched bar onto the rear axle housing. The bars are what keep the axle housing from moving side to side. If the rivet is loose in the housing then fluid from the rear end can leak out. I have had it happen in the past.
