The little box that shows up when you click on the magnifying glass is where you put in your keywords that you want to search for. This type of search will search all the Chatter forum threads. If you want to narrow the search criteria to just some of the threads or to use advanced search techniques, click on the Advanced Forum Search phrase (it is a link) and it will open up the Advanced search form.
